Pedro Alvarez-Urena, Ph.D

Dr. Alvarez-Urena joined Cowen Healthcare Investments in February 2018. He focuses on investments in biotechnology, genomics, life science/diagnostic tools and digital health companies. Dr. Alvarez-Urena serves as a Board Observer of Scipher Medicines and previously served as Board Observer for Oncorus and Personal Genome Diagnostics. He is also currently a member of the Advisory Board of DRIVEN Accelerator Hub from Celdara Medical LLC. He previously worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Pennsylvania while consulting for a Boston-based venture capital firm and for Philadelphia-based venture capitalists and biotechnology companies. His scientific background is in the study and development of polymers to deliver drugs, particularly genetically engineered proteins, small molecules and siRNAs, as well as for improving the efficacy/safety of cell and gene therapy agents.

Dr. Alvarez-Urena holds a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University, and was a Postdoctoral Fellow in Cell and Gene Therapy at Baylor College of Medicine.
