Product Accountant - Digital Assets

Job Overview:

Cowen Inc. is looking to hire a Product Account to join Cowen’s newly formed Digital Asset Accounting division in New York City (WFH) reporting to the Finance Digital Asset Group. 

The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting with the compilation, full oversight, and review of books and records for the Company’s new digital asset trading business. They will also assist in providing audit coordination when required.

Specific responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:  

  • Liaise with Operations and Middle Office to ensure our back-office settlement system is in line with books and records. Diagnose and problem solve where issues arise. Solve up-stream challenges to alleviate the burden on month end close.
  •  Preparation, analysis and proper documentation of the daily and monthly reporting requirements in accordance with US GAAP. Work closely with our technical accountant to stay up to date with US GAAP guidance on digital trading activities (recordkeeping, disclosure, presentation)
  • Review custodian activity on a daily/monthly basis and perform all duties necessary to ensure complete and accurate close
  • Extract data from various trading subledgers, book journal entries and ensure that the general ledger activity is accurate and complete.
  • Help spearhead our Money Transmitter Licensing (MTL) process. Assist with the design of the accounting framework for each state Cowen engages in digital. Help produce necessary internal and external reporting required by state.
  • Work hand in hand with our Valuation Team to ensure accuracy of firm inventory, impairment testing and our realized / unrealized activity.
  • Build out our daily/monthly/quarterly reporting packages. Engage with the Front Office and build the necessary metrics and analytics to enhance trader decision making.
  • Assisting with audit requests including preparation of reconciliations, organizing documents and responding to inquiries if/when an audit is required.
  • Build and maintain strong internal controls and keep process documentation up to date
  • Analyze financial information with a key focus on control and compliance while addressing new requirements.
  • Assist the Finance Digital Asset Group with the build out of Accounting Policy, Risk Control Matrixes and Operational flow documentation
  • Performing special crypto projects and ad hoc reporting as required  


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting (Masters a plus)
  • 5-7 years post-undergraduate experience
  • Preferred exposure with a custodial broker-dealer
  • Organized, detail oriented and self-motivated individual with strong analytical skills
  • Good understanding of accounting principles and GAAP
  • Highly proficient with Microsoft Excel
  • Ability to work within deadlines while still providing a high-quality work product
  • CPA or CPA candidate a plus
