Associate, Investment Banking - Special Situations

Cowen’s New York-based Special Situations Group is seeking an Investment Banking Associate. The successful candidate will play a vital role in all aspects of sourcing and executing Special Situations transactions and maintaining strategic dialogue with clients and key engagement professionals, in conjunction with the firm’s industry and product groups.  The candidate will be responsible for helping to manage and execute a wide range of complex transactions relating to distressed companies, financial restructurings, and special situations.  He/she will also play a critical role in developing junior professionals and helping to identify new engagement opportunities.

Responsibilities:

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Constructing detailed financial analyses in the context of bankruptcy, financial restructuring, and special situations transactions, including, but not limited to, recovery/waterfall analyses, liquidation analyses, and valuation analyses
  • Preparing presentation materials (confidential investment memorandum, strategic alternatives, etc) and participating in and leading meetings with team members, clients, deal professionals, and counterparties
  • Overseeing and performing detailed valuation analyses, including DCF, trading comparables, and precedent transactions
  • Interacting with senior Cowen colleagues and client management teams on a regular basis to execute transactions and assess / discuss strategic alternatives
  • Providing leadership, mentorship, and supervision to other Associates and Analysts
  • Managing deal execution and project management throughout the transaction

Qualifications:

Candidates must have a strong interest in investment banking underpinned by solid quantitative and analytical skills.  He or she should be able to think creatively about a range of strategic issues confronting the firm’s clients and have an exceptional grasp on accounting, valuation, finance, and business strategy. Specific qualifications include:

  • Bachelors’ degree from a leading university; MBA optional, but a plus
  • Minimum of 3 years of investment banking experience, with significant special situations, financial restructuring, or leveraged finance experience
  • High levels of ethics, integrity and sound judgment
  • Ability to comfortably interact with senior clients in a professional setting
  • Strong intellectual curiosity
  • Comfort in and commitment to a teamwork environment, while also providing leadership to junior colleagues
  • Highly organized, detail oriented, and proactive
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
